A movie can feel like hot cocoa and still have nothing to do with Christmas, and that’s the line I’m testing today. I’m flying solo as I review two comfort-heavy favorites from very different corners of the movie universe: Paddington (with a big spotlight on Paddington 2) and the classic musical White Christmas. Along the way, I separate “holiday mood” from “holiday movie,” because those are not the same thing, especially when you’re picking something truly family friendly.

I dig into why the Paddington series is one of the cleanest, most wholesome set of family films you can put on with kids, even if parts of the franchise stumble. I also share why Paddington 3 didn’t work for me, from the recast mom to pulling the story away from London’s cozy intimacy. Then I go all in on Paddington 2 as a five-out-of-five masterpiece, driven by a heartwarming family unit and a hilarious Hugh Grant performance, while still giving it a blunt zero-out-of-five as a Christmas movie rating.

From there, I shift to the quintessential Christmas classic: White Christmas with Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye. We talk iconic songs, quick comedy, the charm of old Hollywood, and the honest reality that some jokes don’t land the same way today. It still earns a five for Christmas spirit and a near-perfect overall score in my book, and it remains a must-watch tradition in our house. If you love movie review podcasts, holiday movie lists, or you’re hunting for safe picks for family movie night, hit play, subscribe, and share this with a friend, then leave a review and tell me: what’s your non-Christmas movie that still feels like Christmas?

Hello everyone, and welcome to a brand new episode of The Couch Critics. I am your host, Nathan, and it's just me again. Sorry, folks. People get busy, and so that's that's life. But we are dwindling down. The snow is starting to melt on our Christmas season of The Couch Critics. And today's episode's a fun one because we have a movie that shouldn't be considered a Christmas movie, but it probably is my favorite movie of all time. And I'm not even exaggerating. And then the other movie we're talking about is a quintessential Christmas classic. We're talking about Paddington, the series of movies, and White Christmas. So if you listen to last week's episode, I said that I liked the first Paddington movie. All right, even though Nicole Kidden's character is borderline crazy and wants to kill Paddington and stuff him. And then the third one, Paddington in Peru, just missed the mark for multiple reasons. They recast the mom. And so that felt kind of weird because a big part of the story was her not wanting her kids to grow up. And so for the actress to not be the same mom from the first two movies, it didn't really make much sense, and I didn't really like it, especially when they tried to go back to like the very first movie and they made it, it just felt really weird, and I didn't like it. And I don't think they should have taken it out of London. The fact that they kind of picked up everyone and put them in Peru, it just missed a lot of marks for me. Apparently, they are still planning on doing a Paddington four. And if they do, and if anyone who's making that movie is listening, number one, bring back the original mom if you can. Number two, because I understand that it was like scheduling issues, and that's why she couldn't do the third one. But it was just is yeah, it was weird to me. But bring her back if you can. Number two, put it back in London because if you putting it into a central location, the first two movies, and then to take it out, I understand they were probably trying to do something different and it just didn't work for me. I like keeping it in London because it makes them more intimate, it keeps the family dynamic going, it's more coherent and all that stuff. And if you can bring back Hugh Grant to play his hilarious character in the fourth one, that would be amazing because Paddington 2 is the one I'm talking about this episode. And seriously, I'm not saying this half-heartedly. It is literally my favorite movie of all time. It's funny, it's family friendly, there's nothing questionable in it, there's nothing inappropriate, no bad language, nothing like that. It's a wholesome movie that is just fun to watch. I was watching the first half of it with my children, and they were engaged with it, and they were smiling and they were laughing. It's just such a heartwarming movie. Now, saying all that, why in the world is this movie on a list of the top 100 movies for Christmas? I don't know. And I think it might be because there are been other movies on this list that give you the feeling of warm and fuzzies that you might get from Christmas movies. I guess that's why. But other than that, there's nothing Christmas about it, but it's still my favorite movie of all time. So for Christmas movie rating wise, I gotta give it a zero. It's not a Christmas movie. It does give me the warm and fuzzies, but it's not the same kind of warm and fuzzies that you would get from a Christmas movie. Now, a general rating, I'm giving this a perfect five out of five. It hits all the marks for me. The second one. Now, as a series, I'd probably still give it a strong maybe 3.5, maybe four out of five, because even though I didn't like the third one and this first one was borderline creepy at times because of Nicole Kimm's character, they are still pretty much the most wholesome movies you can think of. Like there's no innuendos, there's no quote unquote adult jokes, like jokes that only adults will get. I don't see anything in these movies except maybe the first one, again, with the whole no Nicole Kimmen wanting to literally kill Paddington. Nothing else really strikes me as inappropriate for kids to watch. So the Paddington series so far is probably one of the most perfect family movies I've ever seen. But the second one is my favorite movie of all time, and it's mostly because of the acting of the family unit. But the second one gets a gold star because of Hugh Grant. I think his character was phenomenal and just a great villain, someone you can laugh at, someone you don't need to take as villain villainously, villainous, villainous? I don't know what the word I'm a word. But you don't have to take him too seriously as the villain. He's not creepy, he's not trying to kill anybody. It's just a great movie. And so, yeah, I would give Paddington two a five out five out of five, but unfortunately a zero for a Christmas rating. But White Christmas with Bing Crosby and Danny Kay is probably the movie that my wife and I would probably watch every single Christmas. It has, you know, the well-known Christmas tunes, you know, like White Christmas and Snow, Snow, Snow. I mean, it's literally a song about snow. And it's funny, it's classic, it's it's a great story. It's about acknowledging where you came from, honoring the military. There's honoring of the military in this movie. And one of my favorite parts of this movie is actually that they kept a blooper in the film. If you've never seen it, I would highly recommend White Christmas. This is the one of the few episodes where I highly recommend both movies that I'm reviewing. Both of these films I feel are pretty much almost 100% wholesome. White Christmas might have some like jokes that haven't aged well, and some of the wording that is used may not have aged well. And that comes with any quote unquote classic film. There's always something in it that you're like, today that probably wouldn't translate as well. But it's still Vin Crosby, Danny Kay, classic comedy, a lot of physicality. Danny Kay was one of those very physical comedy actors, very expressive with his faces and his voices. Just someone an actor like me can look up to and aspire to be like. He he's kind of like Gene Walter and other actors like that, that are just classic comedians and just always never really miss a beat. Very quick, very, very witty, just a very fun movie. And it is a Christmas movie. So I'm gonna give this a five out of five for Christmas because I really do believe that my wife and I try to watch this every year at least once around Christmas time. So it is one of those movies where it it would feel weird to not at least watch some of it, maybe not all of it, but watch some of it around Christmas time. And when it comes to general rating, I do think it's a pretty close to perfect movie. Like I said, very funny. The songs are very catchy. I just think it's a great, great, great time. So I'm gonna give White Christmas a 4.5 out of five. The reason I don't give it a perfect five is because some of the jokes may not land as well today as they might have back then. So that's why I'm giving it a 4.5 out of five. But that, folks, is my review of Paddington, the series, with an emphasis on Paddington 2. Go watch it. Seriously, it's great. And White Christmas. You should really, I think you should watch that around Christmas time. It'll definitely get you in the Christmas mood. Next Sunday is the last review of April. I cannot believe it's almost May, which means it's almost summertime. So next Sunday is our cinema Sunday. But by the time uh this episode drops, I have not seen the movie I'm gonna be reviewing. Hopefully, I can watch it before the episode, obviously. So I can actually do the episode. But it is supposed to be the Super Mario Galaxy movie. My wife and I have been wanting to see this because we are parents and we're at that phase where we have to review movies before we let our children watch them. But everything I've heard is that this movie is great, it's very fast-paced, which for a kid's movie I'm okay with. I'm okay with the movie going really, really quick. So I'm excited about seeing it. So that's what I'm hoping to review next week on Cinema Sunday on the couch critics. Where every movie gets its close up.
