Speaker 1:

For the first time in New York history, a womb full of people grows to death in July. It's an unimaginable evil, with the power to kill by fear itself Like literally scared to death. Now it's headed straight for us. It's something trying to get out Many things. It's commanding the army of the undead. I think we're all going to die. Hold on, you're in. This could bring about the end of humankind. Disgusting.

Speaker 1:

Hello everyone and welcome to another special surprise episode of nady and katie at the movies. I'm your host, nathan, aka nady, of course, and it is just me again, and I will be talking about Ghostbusters frozen empire, the newest entry in the Ghostbusters franchise. It just came out, but before I can get into it I got to go over the synopsis. When the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second ice age. Ghostbusters frozen empire stars Paul Rudd, kerry Kuhn, finn Wolfhard McKenna, grace Dan Ackroyd and a plethora of other famous people. So let me just get right into my likes and dislikes, because our surprise Saturday episodes are not intended to be super long. So I only have two likes in this movie, and that is, paul Rudd and Dan Ackroyd. Now, of course, everyone else in this movie does a pretty good job with their acting, but I thought Paul Rudd and Dan Ackroyd were the standouts when it came to comedy and just enjoying their performances. I think Paul Rudd has come a long way. I know I didn't really like him and Ant-Man by himself, but when he joined the Avengers he did a really good job with comedic work and this is the same with that. I think this movie does a good job with the ensemble work because again, you have Ghostbusters who are new and old. You have Bill Murray is in this, you have the secretary, you have Winston, so you have famous people from the original Ghostbusters movies in this, and then again the newer people with Phoebe and Egon's family and all of that. So you have them working together. So Paul Rudd and Dan Ackroyd were the standouts for me. I really enjoyed them.

Speaker 1:

My biggest dislikes Let me start by saying I enjoyed Ghostbusters afterlife a lot more than I enjoyed this movie. And when I'm about to save for one of my dislikes, I guess you could say they kind of introduced this concept in Ghostbusters afterlife. If you haven't seen that one, I'm about to spoil it. I'm about to give you the ending. So when they all fight together, the original Ghostbusters actually get to do some ghost busting. In Ghostbusters afterlife they find that they can't do it all just by themselves and then all of a sudden the manifestation of Egon's ghost appears and that's how they're able to take on the final big bad ghost together, because the ghost of Egon shows up.

Speaker 1:

So my biggest dislike in Frozen Empire is that they introduce this random friendly ghost girl who be friends I guess be friends. That's another dislike that I'm about to mention, phoebe. Okay, so they're introducing that ghost can be friendly. And that was one of the big complaints that I've heard a lot of people talk about is that they introduced friendly ghosts and they'd never had that before in a ghostbusters movie. And then that made me start thinking. Well, ghostbusters afterlife kind of introduced that when they brought Egon back as a friendly ghost who helps his friends out.

Speaker 1:

So I'm not really so much against the friendly ghost concept in a ghostbusters movie, but she just came out of nowhere and she really was just a big plot point. I mean, I don't wanna get into big spoilers for this movie because I'm a big believer in ghostly the movie yourself and if you enjoy it, you enjoy it, if you don't, you don't. So I'm not gonna spoil it too much, but it gets me to my big second dislike. And again, or, if you've listened to the show before, you know I don't like check the box moments and this movie almost had a big check the box moment. It kind of teased it a bit for a majority of the movie and that is the fact that Phoebe, in my opinion, starts having feelings for this friendly girl ghost who kind of teases her with feelings herself, to use her in a way.

Speaker 1:

And I was just as soon as I got that feeling that that's what they were doing. Of course I had to roll my eyes and say, oh, my goodness, under my breath and it was just annoying Because, again, why does that have to be in there? Why does it have to be in there? And how do I know that it was more than just a friendship? Because slight spoiler when the girl ghost does betray Phoebe, one of the things that Phoebe first says to this ghost is was any of it real? So that's why you wouldn't say that for a friendship, you wouldn't say was any of our friendship real? No, you wouldn't say that. Okay, so I know what they were going for, and it really annoyed me. So that's another one of my big dislikes.

Speaker 1:

And my third big dislike from this movie is majority of the ghostbusters ended up being useless. None of them were even needed in this movie. The only one that was needed was Phoebe. That's the only character that really needed to be in this movie to do what needed to be done. Even the guy that they had to find to kind of quote unquote, defeat this big bad ended up kind of being pointless too. And so my biggest dislike is majority of the ghostbusters were useless. Dan Akroy, Bill Murray, winston all those characters pointless. Paul Rudd, egon's daughter pointless. They try to make them have some kind of meeting at the end with this whole family message, but it was pointless. Phoebe was the one to figure it out. The only one that really needed to be there was Phoebe, that's it.

Speaker 1:

So I say all that to say that this movie did have some fun moments. It did have moments where I was laughing. It did have moments where I enjoyed it. Okay, so I'm not poo-poo-ing 100% on this movie. I'm not giving this movie a one out of six stars or anything, but what I'm saying is I enjoyed Ghostbusters Afterlife a lot more than this movie and I was disappointed.

Speaker 1:

And one little nitpicky thing as a Christian. One thing I did not like is it kind of was saying that because it mentions some things that happened in the Bible Samson and the burning bush and they basically say that that wasn't God, it was some kind of supernatural ghost stuff that was giving them this power, and that it wasn't really God and the burning bush but a ghost and entity that was speaking to Moses and it was just. It gave me weird vibes that they were doing that kind of disengaging and this explaining dis-explaining is that a word, I don't know dis-explaining God and basically lumping him with the Ghostbusters lore. So I thought that was kind of weird too. So I say all that to say I'm gonna give Ghostbusters Frozen Empire a 3.5 out of six because I still did enjoy it, but I think it was just a really big disappointment for me. I think they missed a lot of what was good about Afterlife and they just went in a weird direction with this storyline and a lot of big plot holes, just things that didn't make any sense. And this is from a movie about ghosts, so maybe I'm overthinking it, I don't know, but all I know is that it just wasn't that great to me. So that is Ghostbusters Afterlife. Oh, nope, it's not because that movie was good.
